A reviewer for NPR says, “It wears its queerness and its narrative weirdness on its sleeve” (Paxson, 2019). After hearing La Sala speak, it is clear how much of himself he put into this novel and I appreciate the nuance he gave to the villain.Īnother aspect I enjoyed (along with many other reviewers) is how queer this novel is and how La Sala subverts many heteronormative tropes in this book. Typically, with novels with many characters, the side characters get lost in the mix and they do not stand out. What I enjoyed most was the different characters that La Sala writes. As a result, I had a hard time following parts of the novel. Kane is slowly piecing together his old life and learning more and more about the danger that landed him in the accident that lost him his memory.

All that Kane knows is that he is gay and that he is alone.Įventually Kane runs into a girl named Ursula who is he feels a connection to, but she is very unwilling to share more about their relationship. They do not seem like a therapist and might actually be a drag queen.

Kane is also very confused as to why the doctor Posey was assigned to his case. The police and his family tell him he was in a car crash, but the closer Kane looks at that truth, the more holes appear in that story. Plot: Kane Montgomery cannot remember how he got into this mess.
